Ciudad de Mexico

National University of Mexico (UNAM)

The mesmerising murals of the Central Library at UNAM designed by Juan O’Gorman using black volcanic stones as the base of the facade.  The building is windowless to keep all the precious books tucked away from the destructive rays of the sun.

The facade tells the story of Mexico’s pre-Hispanic culture and identity. Each wall represents a different era of Mexico’s pre-Hispanic identity - (N) pre-Hispanic Past, (S) Colonial Past, (E) Contemporaneous World, and (W) Modern Mexico.
